BMES Annual Meeting Gets Early Start

austinAdIn the dark days of winter and cold of February, many members' thoughts are already turning to next fall. After last year's largest-ever BMES Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, inquiries are now coming in regarding participating in the Austin, Texas, meeting, to be held October 6-9, 2010, at the University of Texas.

Edward Schilling, executive director of BMES, says that exhibitor booth space is selling well ahead of last year's pace, with nearly 20 of the 100 available booths already sold. "We are seeing colleges and universities moving more quickly to secure prime spaces, and we anticipate a much greater interest from industry and health care exhibitors this year," Schilling says. "The changes we made last year and our projected record attendance of more than 3,000 attendees in 2010 have generated great excitement about the Austin show."

In addition to increased booth interest, BMES executives and meeting planners are now talking with potential sponsors for Austin. The 2010 sponsorship packages are larger and more varied than in the past, offering a broader range of opportunities for sponsors to reach their targeted BME professionals.

Students and researchers have turned their attention to October. February 1 marks the opening of abstract submissions for the 2010 meeting. With more than 1,200 poster presentations available, BMES committee members expect a higher than usual number of submissions by the May 1 deadline.

While the BMES and University of Texas meeting staff have booked hotels and full amenities for the meeting's attendees, the organizers are urging those interested to confirm their plans earlier than they did in 2009. The popular Austin City Limits music festival, set for October 8 through 10, will draw very large crowds of music lovers from across the globe. The festival is known for bringing thousands of people to see acts such as the Dave Matthews Band, Pearl Jam, Ben Harper, and others who appeared last year.
